Choosing Your Garden Power Tools

Some gardening jobs require a little more than elbow grease to get it done. That’s where garden power tools come in. These are powerful, heavy duty tools that require either electricity or gas to run. They get big jobs done in half the time it takes if you were to do it manually using regular hand tools.

Here are the most commonly used garden power tools.

  • Lawn Mowers have greatly evolved since they first made their appearance on lawns almost 200 years ago. They were invented by Edwing Budding in 1827. The first lawn mower was, of course, a manual reel mower. Now you have electric and gas powered lawn mowers that make cutting grass easier than slicing bread. There are many different types of lawn mowers: traditional push mowers, ride-on mowers, tractor mowers, and robotic mowers. The bigger the job, the bigger the recommended mower.
  • Lawn Trimmers, also known as string trimmers, weed wackers, strimmers, line trimmer or whipper snippers, help achieve that polished trimmed looked that many prize winning lawns have. Instead of using a blade, it uses a rapidly rotating flexible monofilament line for cutting and trimming. They finish the job of a lawn mower by cutting grass or shrubs that are in hard to reach and narrow places missed by a lawn mower. They’re commonly used by landscaping professionals as well as individuals who want a cleaner looking and more defined lawn.
  • Leaf Blowers are a great alternative to rakes. They’re more powerful, faster and require a lot less effort to use. Leaf blowers come in either the gas or electric variety. They are multi-purpose hand held devices that can vacuum up leaves and other debris as well as blow them away. Some leaf blowers can also turn your leaves and debris into usable mulch or compost. It’s advisable to use ear muffs, a mask and safety goggles when using a leaf blower because they tend to be quite loud and the gas versions emit carbon monoxide. Also it’s good to protect your eyes from any possible flying debris.
  • Chainsaws may forever be associated with movies like The Chainsaw Massacre, but in reality they are used for less insidious purposes. They are the powered version of a saw and don’t require vigorous back and forth motion since the rotating blades do all the work. Chainsaws are used for cutting down trees, limbs, bushes and other thick shrubberies.
  • Shredders and Chippers shreds and chops up wood, leaves, and other debris into smaller and more manageable sizes. They vary in size and capability. Some shredders are smaller and are used for leaves and small bushes, while others can pulverize an entire tree. The remains can be reused for compost, mulch or even building material. It helps you to recycle what you would’ve otherwise just thrown away.

These power tools are a necessity if you’re the type to do big jobs or have a professional landscaping company. They get the job done quicker and can save you a lot of time. Invest in a couple of solid garden power tools and make yard work a breeze.
